I’ve wanted to be a journalist since early middle school. I admired the ability to disperse information and to craft it in a way that people would be able to understand in the printed word.
When I arrived at college, I learned that writing is just one piece of the puzzle that is journalism and communication. I’m always looking for a new way to tell people the news. Now that I’m out of college, I plan to use my communication skills to work telling people what they want and need to know about their community and society as a whole, through whatever medium that works best.
Currently, I work for the Observer and Eccentric newspapers in Detroit, Mich., a division of Gannett, as the reporter for the Redford Observer. I spend my days covering Redford Township, a suburb directly west of Detroit. I cover local government, general assignment, feature stories, Redford Union schools and police, to name a few.
I graduated in May 2010 with a Bachelor of Science from Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, with majors in news editorial journalism and general political science and a minor in leadership studies.
Previously, I worked as the online coordinator for Heritage Media West, posting stories, reporting and increasing the newsrooms digital efforts. I interned at the Bay City Times, covering general assignment. Before that, I worked as a reporting intern for the Grand Rapids Press, covering politics and government as well as police activity and general assignment. I also previously worked as a news intern at the Daily Tribune in Royal Oak, Mich., my hometown.
I worked for four years at Central Michigan Life, the student newspaper on CMU’s campus. While at CM Life, I worked as a staff and senior reporter, news editor, university editor, managing editor, editor in chief and online editor.
When not doing journalism-esque things, I try to spend as much time as possible outdoors, taking trips hiking, backpacking or canoeing, which can be seen on my outdoors blog. I have traveled to areas such as Isle Royale, Zion National Park, and the Nabakawasi River in Ontario, Canada. I also am a political junkie, loving all things U.S. politics, and a certified USSF soccer referee since 2000.
